How to End the Reign of Folders: SharePoint & Correlate
Instead of following the usual marketing approach of presenting SharePoint 2010, we would like to show a prioritized list of new features that we perceive to be the most relevant for your organization. This description is based on almost 10 years of experience with Microsoft's SharePoint technology and with competing systems:
1. Metadata, Taxonomy & Folksonomy: Metadata plays a much larger role in SharePoint 2010 than ever before. In addition to implementing your organization's information taxonomy, you can now also allow your users to create their own so-called folksonomy. This will make it much easier to retrieve data and elminate most of the costly information dupliation.
2. Office Collaboration: In combination with Microsoft Office 2010, you can now have several users work on one and the same Word document at the same time. SharePoint will ensure that all edits are synchronized in real-time.
3. Easy Creation of new Workspaces: You can now enable your staff to quickly and easily create new collaboration workspaces that can include numerous web 2.0 components like Wikis, Blogs, video galleries, forums and more.
4. New Semantic Search: The new SharePoint 2010 search is now able to rank your search results by relevancy based on the documents you have viewed and authored, as well as on your previous search behaviro. The new search also automatically extracts metadata from documents that goes way beyond the usual "author", "creation date" and "last modified date". Search results can be narrowed down by this metadata.
5. Business Connectivity Services (BCS): Connecting SharePoint to third-party system like CRM, Accounting, ERP, BI, PM and others, has never been this easy. BCS replaces the Business Data Catalog (BDC) and now allows even less technical staff to create integrated applications, within the constraints of your organizations' policies.
6. Offline Support: SharePoint 2010 finally supports taking all your data offline. Once you get back online, SharePoint automatically merges your changes with the server.
7. Rapid Application Development: Workflow applications can now easily be created by non-IT staff. The new SharePoint 2010 can almost be described as a Rapid Application Development (RAD) framework.
8. Social Networking: SharePoint 2010 has a significant focus on social networking abilities. User profiles are now much richer and more flexible. Based on a user's behavior, SharePoint now automatically builds a profile for this user that is used for increased search accuracy and to identify subject matter experts.
9. Visio Services: Users can now collaborate on Visio charts within their web browsers. These charts can be static or they can be connected to external data sources.
