Together with our friends from CipherPoint, we will start off the year with a seminar focusing on how to encrypt SharePoint data (Jan 20, 2011). On January 25, we will have another webinar with the guys over at Metalogix, where we will talk about SharePoint migration strategies and SharePoint BLOB management. In March, we will have a number of events on SharePoint-topics including Disaster Protection, Cloud Hosting and storage strategies.

Today, project collaboration is often loaded with frustration about numerous inefficiencies. We email documents back and forth and then are surprised when a third person made changes to an older version of these documents that cannot be reconciled anymore. We wonder which version of a document is the latest. Sometimes we have several versions in different locations with exactly the same document name. We start working on a dated version of a document or even recreate a document a colleague has already created for a project. We are on the road and do not have access to a specific file, because our VPN connection does not work from the hotel or coffee shop. A server dies or we lose our laptop to theft or a disk crash, and we are not sure we have backups of the latest versions of our files.
The above described document management challenges are only one part of the problem. In addition, we are faced with numerous disparate tools to solve very specific problems: instant messaging, screen sharing, creating a project knowledge base and project management are just some of these challenges. In his interview with Enterprise Systems Ziya points out that embedding software on hardware is costly and inefficient. He argues that "storage applications" should be virtualized just like server and desktop applications. This virtualization will enable a rich set of services that can be applied across hardware types and vendors. Like server and desktop virtualization, storage virtualization will make the enterprise IT infrastructure significantly more scalable.
